Weaver II – One of My Favorite Themes to Use For New Websites

May 20, 2014 by J9 Designs Filed Under: BLOG, Blog Advice

I have been asked more times then I could count when working with bloggers what are the best themes out there for self hosted WordPress sites.

I will admit that there are so many themes to choose from that it can be quite overwhelming for those who are just starting a new self-hosted website or blog.

The first thing, I tell clients is to look at other websites/blogs to see what they like and don’t like.

From a designer’s perspective, I love to be able to start with a clean slate of sorts and design from the ground up.  There is one theme out there that totally allows for this for the most part.

The theme that I am speaking of is called Weaver II.  It is completely free and allows for your site to look and feel totally as your own.

Weaver II has 28 sub themes (or child themes).  The sub theme that allows for the most and best customization is called “Custom”.

This sub theme is pretty much bare bones and you can use the Weaver II Admin in your dashboard to customization pretty much every aspect of your site, including using any HEX color code for all components, such as menus, sidebars and more, as well as even picking custom fonts.

You can even create and make your own custom header and this theme allows for the header to be just about size in width and height.

Even though Weaver II is a free theme, they do offer a Pro version, which you can pay for, which allows for more control over your fonts, including using most Google Fonts for any and all text sections on your site for only $29.95 for the personal version.

I have used this theme for myself, as well as many of my own clients.

Definitely is one of the best out there for free, even if you aren’t looking to upgrade to the paid version, the free one truly is worthy of use by all out there.

I have also used others for website/blog clients and will try in the weeks and months ahead to share more themes (especially Genesis based themes, which I also have a special place for) with you here.

Please let me know if there are any you would like me to expand upon in the comments.

Also take a look below at some of the websites, I have created using Weaver II Theme:

Wow, it really does allow for a ton of customization! I would have never guessed that all of those sites are built off the same theme! thanks for the recommendation!

Alexa, it really does and I literally stumbled over this theme almost 2 years ago, when I put into my theme search bar full customization and this one came up. I still have not found a theme that can do as much as this one can do in all my theme searches for myself and clients, too.

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING INTO A NEW THEME BUT FIND "SELECTING" SOMETHING COMPLETELY OVERWHELMING. I LIKE MINE BUT WANT SOMETHING WIDER. I GUESS MY QUESTION FOR YOU IS: I THOUGHT I HAD READ IF YOU USE A CHILD THEME AND CUSTOMIZE IT, WHEN YOU HAVE TO UPDATE THE "PARENT" (IS THAT EVEN WHAT IT'S CALLED?) YOU LOSE YOUR CUSTOMIZATIONS. IS THAT TRUE?

Stephanie, Child Themes are mainly used in Genesis Framework themes. This theme pretty much allows for you to make your own child theme when using there sub themes. And when you customize this theme, before doing updates, all you have to do is save settings. Once you save the settings, you can update this theme and none of your customizations should be overridden. I hope that makes sense and if you do use this theme and have questions about this, please ask me and will totally try to help you 🙂

I'm just now going through my blogs, looking at categories, tags, etc. to see which have done best and then I'm ready to do a little revamping.

If you start getting dozens of hits on this site tonight…it's me trying to figure it out! Lol

You gave me Weaver II and I love it, but I didn't know I could personalize it! It really is super easy to use though. I haven't had any trouble with it. I may be giving you a call though because I think I'm ready for a redo! LOL! Thanks for the advice Janine!

I use Weaver on my blog, too! I absolutely love their theme. Whenever I’m ready for a change, it’s really easy for me to play with colors, headers, width, etc. I hesitate to recommend it sometimes, though, because it has a LOT to it which can be overwhelming for some. I don’t think it’s by any means hard, there’s just a lot to it. It was fun to see your examples to get more ideas on ways I could change up my own.

Totally happy to share, but I do know what you mean about it might be confusing to some, especially the Weaver II Admin Dashboard, but do know those who I have used it for have done pretty well when they have needed to chance something here and there, too 🙂
