I will be the first to admit sometimes, I am not fully versed in all of Google’s laws and decrees.
So, when I was recently questioned about a new upcoming law from Google to its users about requiring those using Adsense, Double-click and other products to comply with the EU Cookie Law, I was a little less than knowledgeable about this.
But after further investigation, it seems that as of September 30, 2015, Google wants these website customers to comply with this Cookie Law.
But what is the Cookie Law?
This European law states that all digital publishers give visitors to their sites and apps information about their use of cookies and other forms of local storage. In many cases these laws also require that consent be obtained.
But what are Cookies?
According to what whatarecookies.com, “Cookies are small files which are stored on a user’s computer. They are designed to hold a modest amount of data specific to a particular client and website, and can be accessed either by the web server or the client computer. This allows the server to deliver a page tailored to a particular user, or the page itself can contain some script which is aware of the data in the cookie and so is able to carry information from one visit to the website (or related site) to the next.”
So what does this all mean for website owners?
Simply put, this law was put into effect to help protect the privacy of of website visitors from websites from retrieving their information on their computers, tablets or smartphones.
Since it is a law, Google is indeed looking for website owners to comply with this and Google being one of the biggest search engines, I would strongly suggest complying with this law in my honest and humble opinion.
How can your website comply with this law?
On Blogger
You can use CookieAssistant.com to help create a widget to place on your website.
In Blogger, specifically it is suggested that you insert in your html template files in your Footer right before the </body>
tag.
On WordPress Self-hosted
You can also use the above site to create a widget to put in your footer or a simple plugin can also handle this, like Cookie Law Info plugin.
Again this is a new and upcoming trend for Google from what I am hearing and if you have any questions or even need help setting this up even after reading my article, please feel free to contact me.
