NoFollow Links–WordPress Widget That Rock Tutorial

August 27, 2013 by J9 Designs Filed Under: BLOG, Blog Advice

Would you like to make money blogging?

If you answered YES to this question?  Then this post will indeed help you in achieving that goal.

See one of the ways to make money blogging is to write and share sponsored posts on your site.

One of the things about writing these articles is that you have to follow certain guidelines for the FTC (Federal Trades Commission).

For one, you should always post a disclosure with these posts that they are indeed sponsored posts.  On my Confessions of a Mommyaholic Blog, I post a graphic image that I created just for this need, but a simple sentence that explains that you either profited from the affiliation or that you even just got the product in return for your opinion should suffice.  Look below at my image that I include in these types of sponsored posts for a better idea.

Another biggie and detail you need to keep in mind and include is a NoFollow Link.

You may be asking, what is a NoFollow Link?

No Follow Link

No Follow Link

A No Follow Link, according to Wikipedia, is a value that can be assigned to the rel attribute of an HTML a element to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index.

Simply put you don’t want to influence Google or any other search engines rank, because of the links that you include in your post.

But how do we do this?

You could add coding, but let’s be honest many, if not most, are not code savvy.

I am pretty good with light to moderate coding now from all the work I do, but even I would much rather not have to do this type of coding if there is an easier way.

Yes, I am getting to that fact.  There is indeed an easier way (if you are on WordPress) with (you guessed it) a WordPress Widget.

One of the many things I love about WordPress is the fact that a simple widget can do some much for most!

The WordPress Widget is called NoFollow Link.

Now for the fun part, how to install this widget and get it to work.

1.  First as always we have to upload the widget.  So in the search field on “upload plugins”, search for NoFollow Link.

Search for NoFollow Link First

Search for NoFollow Link First

2.  Once it has been searched for you should be able to find it.  The arrow below shows that it is the first on the list from our search. And no just click “install now”.

Find it In the List to Download

Find it In the List to Download

3.  Now that we have downloaded the plugin, we must activate it in order for it to work.  So next to the black arrow you will click on Activate Plugin to indeed do this.

No Activate the Plugin

Now Activate the Plugin

4.  And last but not least, we can use it.  But we must open a new post to do so.  You will see a red button on your post dashboard like the one the arrow points to below.  Just highlight the link you want to attribute the NoFollow link to with this and you are all set.

Use the NoFollow Link Plugin in a post now!

Now you are all set to post your sponsored post and Happy Money Making!

Please do remember to keep us in mind for any and all of your blogging needs.  And also don’t forget that if you use Paypal and you are qualified, you can use Bill Me Later for Payments of more then $99 here!

Thanks again!

Is there a way to do this on Blogger?

You would need to add the code rel="nofollow" o each link you want to do this to. As of right now, WordPress has plugins for this, but Blogger doesn't and like I said would have to add code to the actual link you are trying to have No Follow property to.

Actually you can do this on Blogger–it is already there. When you're in your post, highlight what word you want as your anchor text (clickable link) then the link info box will pop up. Here is where you put the url you want the phrase to link to and there are 2 boxes to check (or leave unchecked if you please). One is for opening in a new tab, and the other is to make the link "no follow." Very easy!

Where do you add the rel="nofollow" ? In the post HTML or can you do it in the layout?

Dawn, take a look at this page that Google uses as support for this exact topic to find out where you should put the nofollow rage: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9656….

Karen, don't worry. It is just a plug-in that you can install and then can use the red button on hyperlinks that you have in your posts (if the hyperlinks are that of companies that paid you or gave you a product for review). If you need any help with this, totally ask and will try my best to help you with it!! 🙂

I am so glad I found your blog and this post. I have just started trying to understand when to use nofollow and have felt completely lost and overwhelmed. After reading your post, I feel much more confident in when to use them and when not to…..hopefully, anyways! I look forward to reading more!

So make me happy to know that I have done that for you and others, too!! And very happy to have you know following and hope to see you around here more now!! 🙂

Install the NoFollow LINK — not NoFollow Links — to get this simple tool. I got confused at first because the title of the post is nofollow links. But, I figured it out when the little stop sign didn't appear. Thanks so much!

Should this be used for all links or just sponsored posts? lol I'm not sure I understand what this means. LOL I also have a question about trackback links….I got a few that linked to me and the pages are spam, is there away I can remove the trackback links and also prevent this from happening again?

You only need to use this for sponsored links on sponsored posts. And Trackbck links can easily be deleted when you are asked about moderation in your commenting dashboard. Once you delete and don't approve they are gone. Do you have Askimet downloaded. If not definitely download and setup this plugin, it will help with most spam comments and trackbacks when possible.
